7:30 p.m.—Photography as writing. Talk by the writer, filmmaker and photographer Jordi Esteva.

The author will tell us about his work on the island of Socotra both in its literary, photographic and documentary film. With Socotra, the island of the geniuses, Jordi transports you to this wonderful island lost in the Indian Ocean that, almost four hundred kilometers from the coast of Arabia, has preserved its primeval flora and fauna. For centuries, both Indian, Greek and Arab sailors and traders of the South traveled attracted by the valuable properties of the fragrant resins of the frankincense and myrrh trees.

His gaze flees from the orientalist temptation so common among Western travelers, and focuses on their personal experiences, in order to reveal a world hidden from the world. “I wanted to go out into the world and get the exotic to cease to be exotoc. That is, to cease to be different and threatening. This is what I intended. To search the worlds that were disappearing”.

This filming diary has been published under the name of La nit portuguesa and has been edited by the publishing house Against. The book includes the chronicle of Gabriel Ventura and the photographs of Román Yñán and takes us into the peculiar way of working of one of the most original directors of contemporary cinema.

The authors will tell us about the stimulus and the difficulties involved in the documentation of the chaotic creative process of another artist. Lastly, we will show a new independent project that emerged as a result of this happy meeting.
